Fox's double-disc DVD pack of The Fly and The Fly 2 presents David Cronenberg's gruesome yet moving update of the '50s horror classic and Chris Walas' gooey sequel with a basic range of features. Both films include anamorphic, widescreen transfers and Dolby Digital 5.1 and Surround Sound -- all the better for showing off Walas' impressive makeup and animatronics in each movie (he won an Academy Award for his work on The Fly). Theatrical trailers for each of the films, the original Fly movies and similarly themed films like Fantastic Voyage and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea round out the discs. Though Walas' disappointing sequel is adequately represented by this rather spare package, The Fly deserves much better treatment; commentary, interviews, a "making of" featurette, or the footage Cronenberg deleted from the film would all go a long way toward presenting it properly. With any luck, Fox will release a separate special edition of The Fly with features like these; as it stands, the two-pack will probably frustrate as many Fly and Cronenberg fans as it pleases. - Heather Phares (
