Siddhartha was released with plenty of advertising space touting its source material, a Herman Hesse novel (Hesse had been "rediscovered" by the turned-on young of the late 1960s). Unfortunately, without stars or wide popular appeal, the film went nowhere. It's too bad: despite its stop-and-start direction and somewhat vague screenplay, this tale of an Indian youth who leaves his family in search of life's meaning has moments of genuine insight and beauty. Particularly worthwhile is the lavish location photography by Bergman associate Sven Nykvist. The director of Siddhartha was Conrad Rooks, whose previous claim to fame was his autobiographical drug-addiction opus of 1966, Chappaqua. - Hal Erickson (allmovie.com)
