Across the Universe (2d)
Rating: 5 September 16, 2010

Adventures of Baron Munchausen, The
Rating: 8 Gilliam at his finest September 22, 2010

There's something so strange about Baron Munchausen as a film that you can never quite put your foot on. Its goofy fun, way over the top.

The plot is simple: Baron Munchausen a man bigger than life and usually the subject of tall tales takes Sally Salt on a wild adventure tracking down his associates in order to save her town from an invasion of turks.

The entire movie visually and mood wise feels larger than life, Innocent and strangely naive.

All star stellar cast including John Neville,Robin Williams, Oliver Reed, Eric idle.

Alice (Jan Svankmajer)
Rating: 6 Offbeat Bizzar, not for the impatient September 22, 2010

With the utilization of taxidermied animals and stop motion animation, this movie comes across as dark abstract and at points unsettling yet still innocent and sweet. Its a strange balance that takes a bit to get used to.

Oddly enough as dark and abstract it is, the film establishes the theme of childhood imagination very very well. An army of cards is literally playing cards, the white rabbit is a taxidermied rabbit that pulls its self from its mountings and begins the fantasy. These type of real world elements help tremendously to establish the concept that you are viewing a child's playtime with random objects from around the house.

The stylization and lack of dialogue are unsettling at first but by the time you get to the scene with the drink me and eat me growth and shrinking objects it all comes into place.

Overall I was left with the feeling that this is what it would be like to see David Lynch (Eraserhead era) do a children's film. Dark, strange, abstract yet still innocent and bizarrely cute.

The additional animation on the disc darkness/light darkness is worth the rental alone.

Big Man Japan (Dai Nipponjin)
Rating: 2 Great Concept, Poor Execution September 22, 2010

When I seen a trailer for this my heart started thumping, here is this fast campy over the top Japan making fun of Japan/Godzilla film. The claymaton stylization(actually i found out its 3d modeling just done with an interesting aesthetic) only added to the campy elements I thought were going to be present in this film.

The reality was very disappointing.

Essentially the movie is a mockumentary about a day in the life of a character who is essentially grows 40 feet and fights monsters when needed.

Ultimately its the pacing that kills the film. The main character is sluggish and portrayed as being nervous and soft spoken throughout the film which wouldn't be an issue if there was a solid counterbalance in place.

The fast pace of the fights shown in the trailer are non existent. Each fight is slow poorly animated with little to no audio giving you the feeling you are watching an unfinished rough cut of a student film.

Brothers Bloom, The (2008)
Rating: 6 A solid, yet mis represented movie September 22, 2010

The trailers to this film will guide you to believe this is a Heist movie, when in fact it is more or less a light drama.

The film revolves around two con men brothers played by mark ruffalo and adrian brody and a new target Rachel Weisz.

The back bone of this movie is the love between the two brothers and what happens when bloom(brody) wants to stop being part of the "game" and start living his own life.

Surprisingly the best two parts of this movie was 1.)Rachel Weisz as a neurotic mess who throws a ratchet in the entire heist, and in the relationship between the two brothers.

2.) Bang Bang the mysterious Asian woman who works with the brothers on heist occasionally.

All and all it's a very solid well crafted sweet funny drama about friendship, family and letting go.

If you liked everything is illuminated you will definitely like this. The same humor and sweet yet sad undertones go through

Choke (2008)
Rating: 2 Lack Luster September 22, 2010

The story is a simple one about redemption. Sam Rockwell is a sex addict who by day works in a Renaissance fair by night stages elaborate incidents making people into heroes and himself into the benefactor.

The over all raunchy and bluntly honest narrative of Victor Mancini is still present in the movie and excellently portrayed by Sam Rockwell.

Unfortunately though the movie while it maintains a lot of the plot points and elements of the book, the raunchy inside the mind of a horrible human being element is overshadowed by the love story elements between victor and paige.

Most importantly the ending from the book is missing. There is no karma like retribution for the "choking" incidents that victor stages almost nightly.

Without the symbolic(i apologize i do not want to spoil the ending of the book) destruction and karma like retribution the entire story looses its ultimate meaning. "a horrible human being may become a better person, but ultimately you are going to have to pay for the horrible things you did first"

Without the ending, and with the love story as a dominant focus the movie becomes easily watered down and unfortunately forgettable.

Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The (2009)
Rating: 2 80% character study 20%detective work September 27, 2010

The girl with the dragon tattoo advertises it's self as a dark and brooding detective story. In reality what you have is more of a character piece with a detective story in the background.

For the first hour of the film the missing woman, the grizzly murder, even the investigation is all thrown to the backseat. What you have instead is a stereotypical troubled subculture twenty something dealing with a social worker who has less than innocent intent for lisbeth.

While this is happening lisbeth slowly becomes infatuated with the journalist she is paid to spy on who is investigating the missing woman case.

When the story finally shift gears from the rebellious subculture youth to the actual missing woman,It becomes almost irrelevant to who did it or why.

The main problem with this film isnt the context, the character or the story (from what i understand its relatively accurate to the book).

The problem is simply that the film makers did not set up the necessary balance between the character development and the story its self.

Fans of the book will enjoy watching this story come to life. Fans of detective stories will be sorely disappointed.

House of the Devil, The (2009)
Rating: 10 Excellent September 30, 2010

Perfectly paced, suspense filled all around well crafted movie. You spend a good hour on the edge of your seat waiting for the pay off. By the time the pay off hits you are floored and the movie turns into a roller coaster ride of chaos.

The best part about this movie has to be the set up. While the traditional horror movie will set you up for multiple little thrills this movie sets you up almost the entire film until the climax.

A man works for a organization that is the equivalent of scientology. After the original head writer dies its Munson chance to move up the corporate ladder. Munson uses the stress of the new position as an excuse to further distance himself from his wife.

As a result his wife finds a new lover in the form of Dr.Korchek who as it turns out is a doppleganger of Munson. things get more complicated when Dr. Korcheck gets bored with Mrs. Munson and becomes infatuated with a woman who is a doppleganger of Ms. Munson.

At the same time there is a reality television series that follows around elmo oxygen as he seduces house wives..later on he destroys public property.

The story as crazy as it is, is very simple to explain. Unfortunately the story is only 1/3rd of what makes schizopolis great.

Its the little things that make this movie amazing and the odd choices. The way that soderbergh shows the distance between the husband and wife.

Fletcher Munson: Generic greeting!
Mrs. Munson: [warmly] Generic greeting returned!
Fletcher Munson: Imminent sustenance.
Mrs. Munson: Overly dramatic statement regarding upcoming meal.
Fletcher Munson: Oooh! False reaction indicating hunger and excitement!

To the use of sped up footage followed by a slow monotonous scene of munson at work.

I really cannot speak highly enough about this movie. If you want something absolutely unique that you have no idea where its going to go than this is your movie.
