So I watched it this past Sunday, and it was beautiful, impressionistic, amazing. I was mesmerized, but I will warn you, everyone else in the room walked out because of incompatible expectations, slow pacing, and at times difficult to follow storyline. I feel a little background reading (IMDB, Wikipedia, reviews by established critics) as well as a familiarity with Hong Kong cinema of the era aren’t necessary, but help create a fuller appreciation of the movie. Most important is an understanding of the genre before you begin watching; it is a complex, visually and thematically rich art film. It requires a little bit of effort and a lot of letting go, letting the film and characters’ words wash over you. If you can do this, I promise you a unique, rewarding experience. A definite 9/10.

I couldn’t agree more – this is a wonderful film we saw at the Beloit International Film Festival last year, and it was the highlight of our trip. It’s an unusual Samurai film, but refreshing is the word, along with rich, rewarding, tender and inspiring.

Like the youngest Park in THE HOST, Ashley’s courage and resilience has proven sufficient in battling her monster! And like the Park family, Ashley’s fellow Ants are here to support her! However…had Ashley seen SLITHER, I doubt she’d be recommending the bathtub as a safe haven. dB

Andrew has masterfully exalted another French film legend of whom I share a similar reverence for. If you’re affected by Mouchette, I highly recommend visiting this unconventional auteur’s other films…including my personal favorite amongst his masterpieces – Pickpocket.
